Artist Reception Invite \ Art Notes-Feb ’16 \
i’m grateful to have 2 pieces on view for the first time from my new series Compost at the ‘Artist Choice Exhibition‘. it’s this Saturday, February 6th from 6-9pm at the b.j. spoke gallery in Huntington, NY. the show will run through February 28th.
‘Bella’
in this series i am exploring, as well as creating, the narrative within the mother and daughter relationship. lorraine and bella have been my primary subjects and the following quote has been a north star for this work:
“… human beings are not born once and for all on the day their mothers give birth to them, … life obliges them over and over again to give birth to themselves.” Gabriel Garcia Marquez
what makes this particularly special is that my work will be hanging alongside lorraine’s – fellow artist, friend, muse and subject of this very series.
‘Roots’
it would be nice to know if i can look forward to seeing you there?

A Collaboration \ Art Notes Monthly – Sept ’15 \
i met lee over a year ago while participating in a writers workshop. unlike me, most of the women were actual writers. as lee read her stories aloud i found myself hanging on her every word. everyone knew i was a visual artist and they encouraged me to bring my work in. eventually i did & the participants riffed off a piece of mine they felt drawn to. it was a very moving experience. and scary. i felt bare, seen and grateful. days later i received an e-mail from lee with a poem she wrote inspired by my photo, ‘Fullmoon’ – from my series, ‘On The Periphery Life Going By’.
i was floored…and honored. how did she know?? it was as if she was inside me experiencing my plight expressing it in words better than i ever could.
a week or so later i received another note with an additional inspired poem based on my photo, ‘On The Bridge’. her words reveal myself to me. with her permission i am publishing them both here alongside the images. i hope you enjoy.
Thoughts on “Fullmoon”
by Lee Goldstein
To look at that ghastly, ghostly house, who would remember me,
who would know of the dead, the lost, the defeated.
On this side of the road, I am cared for, safe.
On that side, the sharp arrows of remembered fear.
A grenade in my hand, to wield or embrace.
I can exhale. The grenade has been launched.
They launched it themselves, murdered themselves.
The ghosts are gone, replaced with the challenge of love.

‘On The Bridge’
Thoughts on “On The Bridge”
by Lee Goldstein
There you are.
Floating by.
Incandescent.
A waft, a whoosh, and I’m floating too, in the wake.
You prod me, determined to have substance, till I notice.
And I raise my head, close my eyes, and whisper “hello”.
Up in the air, floating in the water,
Flying, flying, in your translucent world.

Guess what?!
‘Talia at Soundview’
my work has been accepted into 2 more upcoming juried exhibitions. pretty cool! firstly, the Pocket Sized Exhibition at the Islip Art Museum. Brookwood Hall, 50 Irish Hall, East Islip NY, 11730. the opening is on Sunday, June 28th from 1-4pm and the show runs June 28 – September 13, 2015. and, looking at the list of finalists, i am in some great company.
what makes this especially exciting is that i ‘found’ this negative only a month ago as i looked back over all my work. it was made in ’04 during the development of my 4 year series, On the Periphery Life Going By, where i photographed two sisters almost exclusively. it didn’t make the cut then – frankly i didn’t remember it. but something grabbed me this time. after staring at it on the lightbox i decided to scan it for viewing on my monitor. next came a work print followed by the submission deadline. after much hemming and hawing i decided to submit – it was 1 of 3. talk about fast confirmation.
✻
i’m also pleased to let you know that my image, ‘To Risk’ has been accepted into the International Phone-opgraphy Competition, at foto foto gallery juried by Dan Burkholder. he is an innovator in the field of digital photography. some of you may have seen this piece in the What is A Portrait exhibit last december. however it will be displayed rather differently at this gallery. i’m thrilled to see this image is resonating. the opening is on July 11th 5-7pm at foto foto gallery, huntington, ny.
‘To Risk’
“Risks must be taken because the greatest hazard in life is to risk nothing.”
William Arthur Ward
rarely do i accept commissioned work. this is mostly due to the enormous energy output required & since stamina is not my strong suit, it forces me to be rather selective. i do however love being enticed by interesting projects and was fortunate enough to have one come my way. lucinda is an emerging artist who connected with me through social media. although i hadn’t photographed someone i never met before i did have a strong hunch based on our virtual conversations to do so. boy was i right – the photo-shoot was an inspired creative collaboration and fell right in line with my responsive and spontaneous approach that permeates my personal work. she traveled out of the city to meet me and we spent the majority of our time in a nature preserve next to my home making lots of pictures. in the final moments before dark we scooted over to a small historic cottage on a lush property, neighboring where i live, that had just been restored. the bathroom is my favorite room in the cottage, housing a gorgeous claw foot tub. as if reading my mind she suggested jumping in. voila! inspired by her free spirit, openness & vitality i titled the image, ‘To Risk’ named after the poem by William Arthur Ward. most of my work explores one’s connection to self, each other and the natural world and this was no exception. for me making art with artists and seekers is especially rewarding & the experience urge me on.

Don’t Eat This! \ Art Notes Monthly – May ’15 \
this friday, May 22nd from 6-9pm at the Huntington Arts Council, kick off your memorial day weekend by coming to the opening of the ‘Don’t Eat This’ exhibition. my piece, ‘Cheery Tomatoes’, will be on view. contrary to the exhibition title, you will want to eat these!
‘Cheery Tomatoes’
Unlike the majority of my work, ‘Cheery Tomatoes’ is not part of a particular series. Nor is it my usual subject matter. The tomatoes were a lovely gift that I discovered tied to my door handle as I came home one late summer afternoon. Fresh from the garden the bounty instantly connected me to a time when life was more carefree; much how a song triggers a memory that becomes palpable. Feeling both wistful and overwhelmingly abundant, what else can one do but make art and then eat?!
i’m also excited to let you know that a print from my new series Compost has sold. sharing works in progress is new for me so to say i’m delighted that ‘Refuge’ already has a new home is an understatement. it’s such an honor!
‘Refuge’
feel free to let me know if i’ll see you friday. if you’re unable to make it the show will be up through June 8th, 2015.

A Quick New Year Update \ Art Notes Monthly – Jan ’15 \
‘Life Among The Savages #1’
as if the holidays weren’t enough to keep us busy, i moved smack in the middle of them and have been off-line for a couple of weeks! i’m buried in boxes & exhaustion but wanted to send out a quick note letting you know about an upcoming exhibition, Harvest of Artists at BJ Spoke Gallery in Huntington on Saturday, January 10th from 2-5pm. (i’ll most likely be there only until 3-4pm & it would be great if you are able to come by on the earlier side so i can see you!) this piece, Life Among The Savages #1, is the first in this series making it’s debut. i’m looking forward to sharing it as it’s quite a departure from my portraiture work. these are two hand made gelatin silver prints mounted together to form a single finished piece. creating these is rather labor intensive and nuanced so they are being sold in small limited editions of 3. you can read about it here as well as view the full series.
and, a gentle reminder that the juried exhibition, What is a Portrait? chosen by Ruben Natal-San Miguel is on view through January 17th at Ripe Art Gallery on Park Avenue in Huntington. the gallery is open tuesday thru saturday. there is alot of great work to experience so i highly recommend going!
the opening was a smashing success so for fun i’m sharing some photos from the evening. that’s me with ruben and my piece! he was generous enough to exhibit established artists alongside emerging ones like myself and the last photo offers a glimpse of that.
i’m so grateful for your support of my work and i’m wishing you a year filled with all that your heart desires.

A New Series Begins \ Art Notes Monthly – Dec ’14 \
the start of a new series is filled with excitement, trepidation and expectancy. there’s a passive component imbued with much contemplation before the work actually begins. sometimes it’s a brief period and at others it can be quite lengthy. like this time. i did alot of writing, reading and non-doing before i ever shot the 1st frame. for one thing it was the first time necessary to locate the right subjects. as you probably know by now, i’ve always photographed who i know & love – those already in my sphere. as fate would have it the divine placed lorraine and her daughter, isabella in my life. we share a passion and appreciation for all things art, children and beauty. its been super fun and enlivening.
so much about this new series has turned my working process on it’s head. aside from carefully choosing my new subjects i also decided to take more control by directing the shoot. consequently, i choose the location, clothing and positioning of my subjects. this has been very challenging for someone like me whose work has been mostly responsive, candid and conversational. as much as i come to this work with particular ideas there is still much room for spontaneity. the process may best be described as a hybrid of both styles. and since i always follow where the work leads me, i’m excited to see where we’ll end up!
the working title for this series is Compost where i create the narrative between mother and daughter. the following quote has been the north star of the series:
“… human beings are not born once and for all on the day their mothers give birth to them, … life obliges them over and over again to give birth to themselves.”
Gabriel Garcia Marquez
i’m sure to share more as the series develops.

A Gamine in The Forest \ Art Notes Monthly – Oct ’14 \
rarely do i accept commissioned work. this is mostly due to the enormous energy output required. and since stamina is not my strong suit, it forces me to be rather selective. learning how to embrace the physical challenges as a partner in my work is an on-going process; after all, it has become the prism that informs my art & life.
i do love being enticed by interesting projects and recently i was fortunate enough to have one come my way. this photo-shoot was such a creative collaboration. i just love making art with seekers & artists who are kind, discerning, respectful, informed, cosmopolitan and unconventional. since we’re both so happy with the outcome i’m excited to share the images with you!
i hope you like?! oh, if you’ve been wanting black & white fine art portraits please get in touch!
i have been posting alot of this new work on INSTAGRAM – come have a look!
