Compost

Artist Statement

com·post / käm-pōst/
noun

• decayed organic material returned to the earth as nourishment.

Compost’ is a body of work where, by constructing the narrative within the mother-daughter relationship, I unwittingly created scenes that played out as I imagined my life would have. While making the images was enriching and joyful, the past, present, and future collided woefully in my psyche. What I thought I was making when we began, and where my subconscious ultimately led me, was profoundly startling: loss, dreams, regrets, and grief. How does one carry absence? How does this endless echo alchemize, gradually softening over time? In the end, it becomes a reckoning of existence as a childless mother, culminating in the final image, ‘What Could Have Been’.
